Overwatch to unveil new skins on Korean traditional culture theme for Lunar New Year's Day


Blizzard Entertainment first unveiled two new skins, inspired by traditional Korean culture, in an interview video of a Korean developer to mark the New Year’s Day event of the Overwatch White Rat that kicks off on Thursday.

The interview video by Lee Hak-sung, an overwatch Korean developer, and Lim Hong-chan, a senior artist, uploaded on the official YouTube channel of Overwatch on Wednesday introduced the story of "Pongsan Moira," a new content celebrating the 2020 race, and the background of development with legend Skin and "Samulnori Lucio." The video is the only one made exclusively for the Korean community in the world.

First, "Pongsan Moira" is the third legend to be conceived in traditional Korean mask dances, following "Sanye Orissa" and "Tal Ana" skins. Moira, one of the main figures featured in the Bongsan mask dance, reveals her signature charisma, wearing a flashy eye light and a stylish hanbok. Overwatch Development Team developed skins by incorporating the popularity of mask dance and meaning of eating in the mask dance of Bongsan Mountain into the background of Moira in the world view of the worldview.

The "Samulnori Luciu" legend Skin, whose details are highlighted, said, "Samulnori’s unique outfits perfectly harmonize with Luciu’s characters and color codes. On top of this, detailed production using various materials such as design of weapons, wood and rope based on the traditional Korean percussion form, as well as the national patriotism with the Korean national flag engraved everywhere, including gears and weapons.

The two skins, inspired by Korea’s own traditional culture and created through the modern sense of the overwatch development team, can be acquired through events in the white mouse year game that starts tomorrow.

Lee Hak-sung and Lim Hong-chan, who participated in the developer interview video introducing the Lunar New Year event for the second consecutive year on behalf of the Overwatch development team, said, "As a Korean developer, we are trying to express Korean culture accurately and delicately in the game," adding, "We sincerely thank Korean users for their continued support and love and wish you a happy Lunar New Year's Day with precious people."

Overwatch continues to promote the taste and excellence of Korean art and traditional culture to the world through various contents in the game. In recognition of its service, it became the first game industry to receive the Hanbok Sarang Award under the name of the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism in October 2019.
